Clayton Lake was established in the mid 1950’s to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl. Clayton Lake State Park was dedicated in 1968. The 170 acre lake provides outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, channel catfish, largemouth bass and walleye. 5 state record walleyes have been caught out of Clayton Lake (the current record is 16# 9oz).
Fishing and trolling speed only boating are allowed March through October. Bird watching is popular, especially in the winter, when the lake hosts thousands of Canada geese, many varieties of ducks, and bald eagles. Many varieties of wildlife live in the park - visitors.
Clayton Lake also has one of the most spectacular dinosaur track ways in the world. Over 500 tracks from several types of dinosaurs can be viewed from a boardwalk on the dam’s spillway.
The park also has year around camping, with developed sites (table, shelter, barbeque grill) or hook up sites (with water and electric hook ups) available. Hot showers are available year around.
